Overview

Room-size labels are useful for a first comparison, but they can hide important assumptions. A purifier rated for a certain square footage may be tested with a particular ceiling height, airflow setting, or target cleaning rate. The more reliable approach is to calculate the room’s air volume and then match it to a purifier’s clean air delivery rate, usually shown as CADR.

CADR means clean air delivery rate. It describes how quickly a purifier supplies filtered air, usually expressed in cubic feet per minute (CFM) or cubic metres per hour (m³/h). A higher CADR can clean a larger room, support more air changes per hour, or compensate for conditions such as smoke, frequent door opening, or a heavily occupied space.

For a typical bedroom or living room, select a unit with a published particle CADR that meets or exceeds your calculated requirement. A HEPA air purifier is generally the relevant choice for airborne particles such as dust, pollen, and many smoke particles. For odors and gases, look for a meaningful amount of activated carbon; particle CADR alone does not describe odor removal.

How to estimate the required CADR

Measure the room’s length and width, then measure the ceiling height. Use the following calculation.

  • Room volume in cubic feet: length (ft) × width (ft) × ceiling height (ft)
  • Required CADR in CFM: room volume × target ACH ÷ 60
  • Room volume in cubic metres: length (m) × width (m) × ceiling height (m)
  • Required CADR in m³/h: room volume × target ACH

ACH means air changes per hour: the number of room volumes of filtered air delivered in one hour. Treat ACH as a planning target rather than a guarantee. Real performance depends on the purifier’s actual setting, filter condition, air leakage, placement, and whether the room is open to other spaces.

As a practical starting point, use a lower target for ordinary dust control in a closed room and a higher target when you are managing allergies, pets, cooking particles, or smoke. If a manufacturer publishes CADR in only one unit, convert it before comparing: 1 CFM is approximately 1.7 m³/h. Product specifications may list separate CADR values for dust, smoke, and pollen. When available, use the value most relevant to your concern, and avoid treating an odor or gas claim as equivalent to particle CADR.

Inputs and assumptions that affect the result

Ceiling height

Square footage is not enough when ceilings vary. A 12-foot room contains half again as much air as an otherwise identical room with an 8-foot ceiling. Include vaulted areas where practical, or choose a larger purifier if the room is unusually tall.

Open-plan spaces

Do not automatically apply one room rating to an entire open floor plan. Add the connected areas and use the combined volume only when air can circulate freely between them. Walls, half-height partitions, closed doors, and furniture can reduce mixing. In many homes, two strategically placed purifiers work better than one unit at the edge of a large space.

Pollutant type

For pollen, dust, pet dander, and many smoke particles, focus on particle filtration and CADR. For wildfire smoke, run the purifier continuously during the event, keep windows and doors closed when possible, and choose a unit with both strong particle performance and sufficient activated carbon for odor reduction. For mold spores, filtration can reduce airborne particles, but it does not correct moisture or remove established mold. A purifier only helps when it is used. Check its noise rating at the setting you expect to use, not only its lowest mode. For a bedroom, a slightly oversized unit may be preferable because it can clean effectively at a quieter setting. Worked examples

Bedroom: 12 by 14 feet with an 8-foot ceiling

The volume is 12 × 14 × 8 = 1,344 cubic feet. At a 4 ACH planning target, the calculation is 1,344 × 4 ÷ 60 = 89.6 CFM. Choose a purifier with at least about 90 CFM of published particle CADR, preferably with additional capacity if you want to run it quietly. Living area: 20 by 20 feet with a 10-foot ceiling

The volume is 4,000 cubic feet. At 4 ACH, the requirement is 4,000 × 4 ÷ 60 = 267 CFM. A single unit rated near or above that figure may work if the space is reasonably enclosed and air circulates well. If the area includes a kitchen, hallway, or adjoining rooms, consider the connected volume or divide the requirement between two purifiers.

Open-plan apartment

Suppose a 300-square-foot living area connects directly to a 150-square-foot kitchen and dining area, with 8-foot ceilings. The combined volume is 450 × 8 = 3,600 cubic feet. At 4 ACH, the calculated requirement is 240 CFM. One centrally placed purifier could be suitable if air moves freely, but two smaller units—one near the living area and one near the cooking zone—may provide more even coverage. Avoid placing a unit where cabinets or walls block its intake.

When to recalculate

Revisit the calculation whenever the underlying inputs change. Recalculate after moving the purifier to a larger room, changing the ceiling-height assumption, opening a previously closed space to another room, or adding a second unit. Also review the choice when household conditions change: a new pet, persistent allergy symptoms, frequent indoor cooking, renovation dust, or a period of wildfire smoke may justify a higher target or additional carbon.

Update the shopping comparison when a manufacturer changes a model’s published CADR, filter design, replacement schedule, or operating settings. Prices and replacement-filter costs also change, so compare the total ownership cost again before buying. If the purifier seems less effective, first check filter condition, airflow obstruction, placement, and whether the room is larger than assumed.

Action plan: measure the room, calculate its volume, choose a realistic ACH target, convert the result into CADR, and compare that figure with the purifier’s published rating at a usable speed.
