Choosing an air purifier by the box’s advertised square-foot coverage can be misleading. This practical air purifier room size chart shows how to match room volume, ceiling height, CADR, and air changes per hour so you can select a model that has enough cleaning capacity for a bedroom, apartment, living room, or open-plan space.

Overview

The most useful number for sizing an air purifier is usually its clean air delivery rate, or CADR. CADR describes how quickly a purifier delivers filtered air. A higher CADR generally allows a purifier to clean a larger room, or to clean the same room more frequently.

Room-size labels are useful as a starting point, but they depend on assumptions. Manufacturers may base coverage on a particular ceiling height, fan speed, or air-change target. If your room has high ceilings, an open doorway, frequent smoke exposure, pets, or significant allergy concerns, the printed coverage area may not represent your real needs.

  • Room volume: floor area multiplied by ceiling height.
  • Target air changes per hour (ACH): how many times the purifier’s delivered air would equal the room’s volume in one hour.
  • CADR: the purifier’s clean air delivery rate, normally shown in cubic feet per minute (CFM) or cubic metres per hour (m³/h).

CADR is not the same as filter efficiency. A HEPA air purifier may capture very small particles efficiently, but it still needs enough airflow to provide meaningful room coverage. For odors and smoke gases, also check whether the model has a substantial activated-carbon filter; particle CADR alone does not describe odor removal.

How to estimate the required CADR

Use this simple formula for a room measured in feet:

Required CADR in CFM = room length × room width × ceiling height × target ACH ÷ 60

For metric measurements, use:

Required CADR in m³/h = room length × room width × ceiling height × target ACH

For a general planning estimate, four air changes per hour is a useful working target for many occupied rooms. It is not a universal requirement. You may choose a higher target when the room has persistent dust, pets, outdoor smoke, or allergy concerns. A lower target may be acceptable when the purifier is supplemental to good ventilation and source control.

Inputs and assumptions that change the result

Ceiling height

Floor area alone does not describe how much air must be treated. A 200-square-foot room with a 12-foot ceiling contains 50 percent more air than a 200-square-foot room with an eight-foot ceiling. Measure from the finished floor to the ceiling and use the actual height in the formula.

Doors, hallways, and open plans

Air does not move evenly through a home. A purifier in a living room may not clean a closed bedroom effectively, even if the combined square footage appears to fit the advertised coverage. For an open-plan apartment, calculate the connected area only if air can circulate freely. Otherwise, size the purifier for the primary zone or use separate units.

Pollutant type

For dust, pollen, and many airborne particles, prioritize a well-sealed purifier with appropriate particle filtration and sufficient CADR. For wildfire smoke or tobacco smoke, higher airflow can shorten the time needed to reduce particles, while activated carbon may help with some odors and gases. Size for the speed you will actually use. A small purifier running at maximum may technically move enough air, but noise can lead to shorter operating times. Filter and maintenance costs

The purchase price is only one part of ownership. Check replacement-filter availability, expected replacement intervals, energy use, and whether the prefilter can be cleaned. A purifier that is affordable to operate is easier to keep running consistently. Do not postpone filter replacement indefinitely: a loaded filter can reduce airflow, while a neglected prefilter can make the fan work harder.

Worked examples

Example 1: A 12-by-15-foot bedroom

The room is 180 square feet with an eight-foot ceiling. At a four-ACH target:

12 × 15 × 8 × 4 ÷ 60 = 96 CFM

Select a purifier with a published CADR around 96 CFM or higher, preferably with additional capacity if the bedroom has a pet, heavy dust, or outdoor smoke intrusion. This room contains 4,000 cubic feet of air. At four ACH:

20 × 20 × 10 × 4 ÷ 60 = 267 CFM

A unit advertised for 400 square feet under lower assumptions may not provide the same performance in this taller room. Look for at least the calculated airflow at a usable setting. Two purifiers placed at opposite ends can improve distribution, especially when furniture or doorways interrupt circulation.

Example 3: An 800-square-foot open-plan apartment

Do not automatically treat the entire apartment as one room. If the kitchen, living area, and dining area are connected but the bedroom door is usually closed, calculate the shared living zone separately. A purifier near the center of that zone may be more effective than one unit placed in a corner. A second, quieter unit in the bedroom can address overnight air cleaning without requiring the living-room purifier to move air through a hallway.

When to recalculate

Revisit your estimate whenever the inputs change. Recalculate after moving to a home with different ceiling heights, combining rooms, adding or removing a door, or changing how the space is used. A home office that becomes a nursery, pet room, or sleeping space may justify a different operating schedule or target.

Recheck the decision when pollutant conditions change as well. Wildfire smoke, renovation dust, a new pet, seasonal pollen, or recurring odors can make additional CADR or carbon filtration worthwhile.
